🇨🇦 What is Canada’s Start-Up Visa (SUV) Program?

The Start-Up Visa (SUV) Program is a federal immigration pathway designed for foreign entrepreneurs with the potential to build innovative businesses in Canada, create local jobs, and compete globally.

This program offers a direct pathway to permanent residence (PR) without first needing a temporary work permit—though applicants may choose to enter Canada on a work permit while waiting for PR approval.

Basic Eligibility (Official Requirements)

  • Qualified Business / Start-up Idea

Must be innovative, scalable, and capable of creating jobs in Canada.

  • Letter of Support from a Designated Organization

    Support can come from:

    • Venture Capital Fund

    • Angel Investor Group

    • Business Incubator

▶ The full list of designated organizations is available on the official IRCC website.

  • Language Proficiency

English or French at CLB 5 (about IELTS 5.0) in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing).

  • Proof of Funds

Applicants must show sufficient settlement funds and cannot borrow from Canadian institutions.

For 2025, the required minimum is CAD $14,690 for one person, with additional amounts per family member (see IRCC guidelines).

  • Up to 5 founders can apply together

At least one must hold majority voting rights and secure a Letter of Support; otherwise, the entire group’s application will be refused.
