If you are applying for a Canadian visa, work permit, study permit, or permanent residency, you may be required to provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo). Biometrics is a way for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to verify your identity. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you complete the process smoothly.
1. Determine if you need to provide biometrics
Not all Canadian visa or immigration applications require biometrics. Typically, you will be asked to provide them if you are applying for:
- A visa (e.g., visitor visa, study permit, or work permit)
- Permanent residence in Canada
- Other immigration-related applications
After you submit your application, if biometrics are required, IRCC will issue you a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL). Keep this letter safe—it tells you when and where to provide your biometrics.
2. Receive your Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL)
The BIL will include:
- The location and time where you need to provide biometrics
- The deadline for submission
⚠️ This letter is very important. Make sure to keep it safe and complete the biometrics within the given deadline.
3. Book your biometrics appointment
Follow the instructions in the BIL to select an authorized biometric collection site and book an appointment.
In Taiwan, you can go to VFS Global in Taipei (Visa Application Centre), which is Canada’s official partner for biometric collection and visa services.
📌 On the day of your appointment, bring:
- Appointment confirmation
- Passport copy (2 copies, A4 size; on-site copy/print is NT$11 each)
- Printed Biometric Instruction Letter (IMM5756)
- Original passport
- Other ID documents (e.g., National ID card)
- 1 signed VFS consent form (for biometrics collection authorization)
- Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult
👉 Notes:
- No need to remove gel nails, but facial injuries, fingerprint injuries, or nail polish may prevent successful scanning.
- If your scan is rejected, you must wait 30 days to redo it.
4. Pay the biometrics fee
Before submitting your biometrics, you need to pay the processing fee.
Currently, the biometrics fee is about CAD $85, but this may vary depending on your situation. Confirm the fee when you book your appointment.
5. Wait for processing
After biometrics are collected, your data will be uploaded to the IRCC system for further processing of your application. Biometrics helps confirm your identity and speed up the visa or immigration process.
6. Special cases
- If you have provided biometrics within the past 5 years, you may not need to provide them again.
- If your personal information is incorrect or you encounter issues, contact IRCC or your local Visa Application Centre (VAC) for assistance.
❤️ Tips
- Be punctual: arrive on time at your appointment location.
- Bring all required documents: BIL, valid passport, and supporting IDs.
By following these steps, you can successfully complete the Canadian biometrics process and move forward with your study, work, or immigration journey. For more details, visit the official IRCC website or contact us for guidance.
