Canadian visa application | Biometrics biometrics processing
May 2, 2025

If you are applying for a visa, work permit, study permit or immigration to Canada, you may be required to provide biometrics. Biometrics is one way Immigration and Refugees Canada (IRCC) confirms your identity. Here is a detailed application process to help you complete this process smoothly.
1. Determine if biometrics is required
Not all Canadian visa or immigration applications require biometrics. Generally, you will be asked to provide biometrics if you are applying for:
Visa (e.g. tourist visa, student visa or work visa)
Canadian Permanent Residency Application
Other immigration related applications
After you submit your application, if biometrics are required, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will send you a notification letter (save it!) telling you when and where to submit your biometrics.
2. Receive biometric fingerprint recognition notification letter
When you receive your biometric notification letter from IRCC, it will include:
You will be asked to provide the exact time and location where your biometric fingerprint was taken.
Deadline for providing biometric fingerprints.
This letter is very important. Please keep it safe and provide your biometric fingerprints within the time specified in the letter.
3. Make an appointment for biometric fingerprint recognition
You need to choose an appropriate biometric fingerprint collection location and make an appointment according to the instructions in the IRCC notification letter. In Taiwan, you can go to VFS Global (visa application center) in Taipei to provide biometric fingerprint collection services. VFS Global is an official Canadian visa application center responsible for processing many types of visa applications, including biometric fingerprint collection.

4. Pay the biometric fingerprint fee
Before submitting your biometrics, you will need to pay the biometrics processing fee. According to the latest regulations, the biometrics processing fee is approximately $85 CAD , however, the fee may vary depending on your specific situation. You can check the latest fee information when making an appointment.
5. Wait for processing
Once you have completed the biometric fingerprint collection, your data will be uploaded to the IRCC system and your application will be further processed. Biometric information will be used to verify your identity and expedite the processing of your visa or immigration application.
6. Special Circumstances
If you have provided your biometrics within the last five years, IRCC may waive the requirement to submit them again.
If your personal information is incorrect or you encounter any problems during the process, you can contact IRCC or your local visa application center for assistance.
